AMPATUAN — 2009 · Major Tragedy
Maguindanao Massacre
On 23 November 2009 on the island of Mindanao, a convoy carrying the family of a politician going to file his candidacy for governor, along with accompanying journalists, was stopped by around 100 armed men. The people in the convoy were taken to a hilltop and killed: 58 died, 32 of them journalists — the deadliest single attack on journalists ever recorded. Suspicion fell on a powerful political clan that had ruled the province for decades. After a decade-long trial, a Quezon City court in December 2019 convicted 28 people, including clan leaders, of murder; the principal accused received sentences without parole.
