SHAH ALAM — 2006 · Murder
Altantuya Shaariibuu Case
Mongolian translator Altantuya Shaariibuu was killed in October 2006 in the Puncak Alam forest near Shah Alam. The case caused a major political storm because of her connection to a political adviser linked to Malaysia's purchase of submarines from France. Two police commandos from a VIP protection unit were sentenced to death in 2009; they were acquitted on appeal in 2013, but the Federal Court reinstated their convictions in January 2015. One fled to Australia and was not extradited because of the death penalty. The other's sentence was commuted to 40 years in 2023. Whether anyone ordered the killing remains debated.
