Mona Fandey and the Murder of Mazlan Idris

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Pahang state assemblyman Mazlan Idris, hoping to advance his political career, approached Mona Fandey, a former pop singer known as a 'bomoh' (shaman-healer), and her husband. The couple demanded a large sum of money and land titles as security in return for a talisman they claimed would empower him. On 2 July 1993, after withdrawing a large amount of cash from banks, Mazlan met the couple at their house in Raub and disappeared. After the couple's assistant was detained for an unrelated offence, police found Mazlan's body on the grounds of the house on 22 July 1993. Mona Fandey, her husband and their assistant were convicted of murder on 9 February 1995 and sentenced to death. The Federal Court rejected their appeal in 1999, and the three were executed at Kajang Prison on 2 November 2001.
