The Death of Teoh Beng Hock

UnsolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Teoh Beng Hock, political aide to a Selangor state executive councillor, was taken to the Shah Alam office of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on 15 July 2009 as a graft-probe witness and questioned overnight. The following afternoon he was found dead on a lower rooftop of the building next to the office. His family, noting he was due to marry the next day, rejected suicide. A 2011 inquest returned an open verdict, and a Royal Commission later that year found suicide driven by aggressive interrogation. In 2014, however, the Court of Appeal ruled the death was caused by unlawful acts of unknown persons, including MACC officers. No one has been prosecuted.
