BANTING — 2010 · Serial Murder
The Banting murders
On 30 August 2010, in the Banting area of Malaysia's Selangor state, businesswoman Sosilawati Lawiya (47), the owner of a cosmetics company, was killed along with three people who had accompanied her — her lawyer (44), her driver (38), and an employee (32) — at a farm where they had gone to discuss a land deal. None of the victims' bodies were ever recovered. The investigation presented forensic findings, phone records, and witness testimony as evidence. In 2013, four defendants were found guilty on four separate counts of murder and sentenced to death; in 2017 the appellate court upheld the sentences for three of the defendants and acquitted one. The case is regarded as one of the most significant convictions without a recovered body in Malaysian legal history.
