MANGALURU — 2009 · Serial Murder
The "Cyanide" Mohan Case
Between 2003 and 2009 in southern Karnataka, young women, many from poor families and looking for a husband, were found dead one after another at bus stations. The deaths were initially recorded as suicides. An investigation that began with a woman's disappearance in 2009 led police to a schoolteacher who had deceived women with promises of marriage; Mohan Kumar was arrested on 21 October 2009. A fast-track court in Mangaluru convicted him of killing 20 women. Death sentences in some cases were commuted to life imprisonment by the Karnataka High Court. The case became an example of why deaths assumed to be suicides should be re-examined.
