ANAPU — 2005 · Murder
The Murder of Sister Dorothy Stang
Dorothy Stang, a 73-year-old US-born nun who had become a Brazilian citizen, was shot dead by gunmen on 12 February 2005 in the Anapu area of Pará state, at a settlement where she defended poor farmers' land rights and the Amazon forest. For years she had opposed land grabbers and illegal loggers and had received death threats. The killing drew international outrage, and the Brazilian government declared protected areas in the region. Two gunmen were convicted in 2005. The two ranchers who ordered the killing were also sentenced to 30 years each after years of trials that were repeatedly overturned and reheld.
