CARACAS — 2004 · Murder
The Car-Bomb Assassination of Prosecutor Danilo Anderson
Prosecutor Danilo Anderson was one of Venezuela's most visible lawyers, leading cases against those involved in the 2002 coup attempt. On the night of 18 November 2004 he was killed in Los Chaguaramos, Caracas, when a bomb placed in his car exploded. The government described the attack as an act of terrorism against the state. In December 2005 three brothers were convicted as the perpetrators; however, the testimony of a key witness in the prosecution was later seriously questioned, and the case remained controversial at home and in the international press. The assassination is recorded as one of the harshest episodes of political polarisation in Chávez-era Venezuela.
