The Murder of Mónica Spear
Mónica Spear, Miss Venezuela 2004 and a soap-opera actress, and her former husband were shot dead during a robbery attempt on the night of 6 January 2014 after their car broke down on the Valencia-Puerto Cabello highway in Carabobo state; their young daughter survived with injuries. The killing of one of the country's best-known faces sparked a wave of public anger over Venezuela's high murder rate and pushed the government to announce new security measures. Three adult perpetrators confessed and were sentenced to 24-26 years in September 2014, and two minors received prison terms in 2015.
