The Murder of Sea Turtle Defender Jairo Mora

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Jairo Mora Sandoval, a 26-year-old conservationist, was patrolling Moín beach near Limón to protect leatherback turtle nests on the night of 30 May 2013 when he and four foreign women volunteers were abducted by an armed group. The women escaped; Mora was found dead on the beach. The killing, believed to be linked to turtle-egg poaching, drew international outrage. At the first trial in January 2015 all seven defendants were acquitted; after the verdict was overturned, a retrial in March 2016 convicted four defendants of murder and kidnapping and handed down heavy prison terms.
