RIO DE JANEIRO — 2018 · Murder
The Assassination of Marielle Franco
Marielle Franco, a Rio de Janeiro city councillor, advocate for Black and LGBTQ+ rights and critic of police violence and militias, was shot dead in her car with her driver Anderson Gomes on the night of 14 March 2018. The investigation stalled for a long time; two former police officers were arrested in March 2019. The ex-officers who fired the shots and drove the car were convicted by a jury in October 2024 after cooperation deals. In March 2024 two politician brothers alleged to have ordered the killing and a former Rio police chief were arrested. In February 2026 Brazil's Supreme Federal Court convicted the brothers of ordering the murder and the former police chief of obstructing the investigation.
