The Dom Phillips and Bruno Pereira case
In June 2022, in the Vale do Javari region of the Brazilian Amazon, British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous-affairs expert Bruno Pereira disappeared. They had been investigating illegal fishing and mining activity in the region. Their bodies were found after a search lasting several days. The case drew international attention to the scale of violence against environmental defenders in the Amazon; suspects were apprehended in the investigation and judicial proceedings were opened.
