PÉTION-VILLE — 2021 · Murder
The Assassination of President Jovenel Moïse
At around 1 a.m. on 7 July 2021, Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was killed in an armed attack on his residence near Port-au-Prince; his wife was badly wounded and flown to the United States for treatment. The attack was allegedly carried out by a group of about 28 mercenaries, most of them former Colombian soldiers. None of the president's guards was hurt. The same day, security forces killed three suspects and detained twenty. Because part of the plot was organised in the United States, federal cases were brought in Miami, where several defendants pleaded guilty and received life sentences. In Haiti the investigation stalled amid political crisis, gang violence and the resignation of judges, and who ordered the killing remains disputed.
