RIO DE JANEIRO — 1992 · Murder
The Murder of Actress Daniella Perez
Actress and dancer Daniella Perez, 22, was starring in the telenovela "De Corpo e Alma", written by her mother Glória Perez. On the night of 28 December 1992, in Rio de Janeiro's Barra da Tijuca district, she was ambushed and killed by her co-star and his wife. The murder overshadowed even the news of President Collor's impeachment in the same days. Her mother's campaign, which gathered more than 1.3 million signatures, led in 1994 to murder being added to the "heinous crimes" (crimes hediondos) law. The two defendants were convicted by jury in 1997 and sentenced to 19 and 18.5 years, but were released in 1999. The case is remembered as one of the first major changes to Brazilian criminal law driven by a popular initiative.
