The Murder of Photojournalist José Luis Cabezas

SolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

José Luis Cabezas, a photographer for Noticias magazine, had caused a sensation in 1996 by photographing a powerful businessman whose picture had almost never been published. On the morning of 25 January 1997, returning from a party in the summer resort of Pinamar, he was abducted; he was found dead inside his burnt-out car in a pit near General Madariaga. The murder triggered mass demonstrations for press freedom in Argentina, and the slogan "Don't forget Cabezas" became a symbol. In February 2000 a court in Dolores sentenced eight people, including Buenos Aires provincial police officers and members of a gang known as "Los Horneros", to life imprisonment. Most of the convicts were later released after sentence reductions.
