LIMA — 1992 · Murder
The La Cantuta Massacre
At dawn on 18 July 1992, soldiers entered the dormitories of the Enrique Guzmán y Valle National University of Education, known as La Cantuta, east of Lima, and abducted nine students and a professor alleged to be linked to the Shining Path. They were killed by Grupo Colina, an army death squad operating under the Fujimori government. In 1993 information leaked from military sources and a map led investigators to the victims' clandestine graves. An amnesty law passed in 1995 freed the perpetrators, but it was later invalidated. The massacre was among the crimes for which former President Alberto Fujimori was convicted of human rights abuses on 7 April 2009.
