LIMA — 1991 · Murder
The Barrios Altos Massacre
On the night of 3 November 1991 an armed, masked group raided a fundraising party at a house in Lima's historic Barrios Altos neighbourhood. The attackers killed 15 people, including an 8-year-old child, and wounded four. It later emerged that the attack was carried out by "Grupo Colina", a death squad linked to army intelligence and formed in the name of fighting Shining Path guerrillas. A 1995 amnesty law shielded those responsible, but in 2001 the Inter-American Court of Human Rights ruled such laws invalid. Former president Alberto Fujimori was sentenced to 25 years in 2009 over this massacre and the La Cantuta case.
