The Murder of Fernando Báez Sosa
Eighteen-year-old Fernando Báez Sosa was killed on the morning of 18 January 2020 outside a nightclub in the Argentine seaside town of Villa Gesell after being attacked by a group of young rugby players. Footage of the attack caused national outrage and fuelled debate in Argentina about group violence among young men, class and discrimination. Eight rugby players were arrested soon afterwards. At a closely followed trial that began in January 2023, five of the defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment and three to 15 years on 6 February 2023. It became one of the most watched criminal cases in Argentina in recent years.
