SÃO PAULO — 1998 · Serial Murder
The "Maníaco do Parque" Murders
In 1997-1998 the bodies of several young women were found in the wooded Parque do Estado in southern São Paulo. Dubbed the 'Maníaco do Parque' (the Park Maniac) by the Brazilian press, the perpetrator lured women to the park by presenting himself as a fashion photographer. The testimony of a survivor and a composite sketch published in the press accelerated the investigation. The perpetrator, a motorcycle courier, was arrested on 4 August 1998 in the town of Itaqui in Rio Grande do Sul. He was sentenced to a total of 268 years for 11 murders and other assaults. The case gripped Brazil and later inspired documentaries and films.
