BOKSBURG — 1995 · Serial Murder
ABC Murders (Moses Sithole)
In 1994-1995 women's bodies were found one after another in Atteridgeville, Boksburg and Cleveland in South Africa's Gauteng region; from the areas' initials the case became known as the 'ABC Murders'. The killer proved to be Moses Sithole, who ran an unregistered organisation that claimed to fight child abuse and lured women to remote areas with fake job interviews. The killings caused nationwide panic, and President Nelson Mandela went to Boksburg to appeal for public help. The country's first criminal profiler worked on the case. In October 1995 Sithole phoned a newspaper and identified himself as the killer, and he was soon caught, wounded, in Johannesburg. In December 1997 he was convicted of 38 murders and sentenced to a total of 2,410 years in prison.
