Collapse of the Ponte Morandi

Under InvestigationSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

At 11:36 on 14 August 2018, a section of about 210 metres of the Morandi viaduct, carrying the A10 motorway over Genoa's Polcevera valley, collapsed during heavy rain. Vehicles on the bridge fell tens of metres; 43 people were killed. Hundreds of residents were evacuated from homes beneath the bridge. Investigators found that the stay cables were badly corroded and that maintenance and inspections had been inadequate. The disaster led to control of the motorway operator Autostrade per l'Italia passing from the Benetton family's Atlantia to the state-controlled Cassa Depositi e Prestiti. The new San Giorgio bridge, designed by Renzo Piano, opened in August 2020. The criminal trial of company and ministry managers began in July 2022.
