PRADS-HAUTE-BLÉONE — 2015 · Major Tragedy
Germanwings Flight 9525
On 24 March 2015 Germanwings Flight 9525, an Airbus A320 flying from Barcelona to Düsseldorf, crashed into a mountain near Prads-Haute-Bléone in the French Alps. All 144 passengers and 6 crew, 150 people in total, were killed. According to the final report of France's BEA, the crash was caused by the deliberate and planned action of the co-pilot, who was alone in the cockpit; the captain was unable to re-enter. The report highlighted that the pilot's earlier mental health problems had not been reported to his employer. Afterwards many airlines adopted a rule requiring two people in the cockpit at all times, and pilot medical oversight came under scrutiny.
