The Rana Plaza Collapse

Under InvestigationSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the morning of 24 April 2013 the nine-storey Rana Plaza building in Savar, near Dhaka, which housed several garment factories, collapsed due to structural failure. Large cracks had appeared the day before; shops and a bank on the lower floors closed, but factories on the upper floors called workers back in. After 19 days of search and rescue, the death toll was confirmed at 1,134, with around 2,500 people rescued injured. The disaster put working conditions in the global garment supply chain on the world agenda. Trials of dozens of defendants, including the building's owner, remain unfinished more than a decade later.
