RG Kar Medical College Case
On 9 August 2024, a postgraduate trainee doctor on duty at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was found raped and murdered in the hospital's seminar room. Indian law forbids naming her. Doctors across the country went on strike for weeks and women held 'Reclaim the Night' marches. The Calcutta High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the Supreme Court set up a national task force on the safety of medical workers. In January 2025 a former Kolkata Police civic volunteer was convicted by a Sealdah court and sentenced to life imprisonment. Her family and doctors' groups continued to argue that he did not act alone.
