The Zhuhai Sports Centre Car Attack
On the evening of 11 November 2024 a 62-year-old man in Zhuhai, Guangdong province, drove his SUV into around 300 people exercising on the running track of the Zhuhai Sports Centre, circling the track and striking many of them. Authorities initially reported 35 dead; the final toll reached 38 dead and 48 injured. The court found he had acted out of anger over the division of property after his divorce and personal frustration. The attack came the day before a major military and civil air show in the city; the removal of flowers and memorials from the site and limits on news coverage drew criticism. He was sentenced to death on 27 December 2024 and executed on 20 January 2025.
