HATHRAS — 2024 · Major Tragedy
Hathras Stampede
On 2 July 2024, a crush broke out in Phulrai village in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district as a large religious gathering (satsang) held by a preacher was breaking up. Far more people were reported to have attended than the event had permission for. As the crowd surged forward to get close to the preacher at the end of the event, people were trampled or fell into a roadside ditch. 121 people died, the great majority of them women. Police arrested several members of the organising team and the state government set up a judicial commission. The disaster renewed scrutiny of crowd management at mass religious events in India.
