MORBI — 2022 · Major Tragedy
Morbi Suspension Bridge Collapse
On the evening of 30 October 2022, a pedestrian suspension bridge built in 1877 over the Machchhu River in Morbi, Gujarat, gave way under a crowd. Hundreds of people visiting for the Diwali and Chhath festivals fell about 10 metres into the river, and the death toll reached 135. The bridge had reopened only days earlier after six months of repairs, and it was alleged that it had been put back into service without an official fitness certificate. The next day police detained nine people, including ticket clerks and repair contractors, on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The disaster renewed debate in India about the maintenance and oversight of historic structures.
