CHARKHI DADRI — 1996 · Major Tragedy
Charkhi Dadri Mid-Air Collision
On the evening of 12 November 1996, Saudi Arabian Airlines Flight 763, a Boeing 747 bound from Delhi to Jeddah via Dhahran, collided over Charkhi Dadri in Haryana with Kazakhstan Airlines Flight 1907, an Ilyushin Il-76 descending towards Delhi from Shymkent. All 349 people aboard both aircraft were killed, making it the deadliest mid-air collision in history. The inquiry found that the Kazakh crew had misunderstood their altitude clearance and descended below it, with communication problems and system shortcomings also contributing. After the disaster India made collision-avoidance systems (TCAS) mandatory for civil aircraft.
