The Murder of Journalist Udin

UnsolvedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin, known as Udin, a reporter for the Yogyakarta daily Bernas, had spent the months before his death reporting on alleged corruption in Bantul Regency, notably claims that the regent had paid a bribe to keep his post. On 13 August 1996 he was attacked by two men outside his home in Bantul, and he died three days later, on 16 August, without regaining consciousness. Police presented the killing as a personal matter of jealousy and arrested a driver, but the evidence was weak and the defendant was acquitted in 1997. A police officer who destroyed evidence was convicted. The real culprits were never found, and the case passed the statute of limitations in 2014.
