NANJING — 1996 · Unsolved Case
The Nanjing University Student Murder
Diao Aiqing, a 19-year-old Nanjing University student, was not seen again after leaving her dormitory on 10 January 1996. Nine days later, on 19 January 1996, her remains were found in the city centre. The case caused an uproar in China and over the years became one of the most discussed unsolved cases on internet forums. In 2016 police said the case was still open and DNA examinations were continuing. In 2021 the family sued the university, arguing it bore responsibility for her removal from the dormitory before she disappeared. Nearly thirty years on, no offender has been identified.
