SOFIA — 1996 · Unsolved Case
The Assassination of Former PM Andrey Lukanov
Andrey Lukanov, Bulgaria's first post-communist prime minister, was shot dead at close range outside his home in Sofia on the morning of 2 October 1996, at a time of economic crisis and rising organised crime. Five defendants were sentenced to life imprisonment, but roughly a decade later all were acquitted on appeal, the court citing gaps in the evidence, procedural irregularities and claims that the accused had been seriously mistreated during interrogation. The European Court of Human Rights also found that one defendant had been tortured by police. The murder officially remains unsolved.
