Assassination of Iliya Pavlov
Iliya Pavlov, regarded as Bulgaria's richest businessman and founder of the Multigroup conglomerate, was killed by a single long-range shot at the entrance to his company headquarters in Sofia on the evening of 7 March 2003. His four bodyguards were unhurt. Pavlov headed a business empire that grew rapidly during the transition of the 1990s and was often discussed in connection with links between politics and organised crime. Investigators examined many possible motives, from conflicts over fashion and beauty pageant businesses to energy projects, and a suspect was reportedly looked at for a time. No one has ever been formally charged, and the case remains unsolved.
