BÂRLAD — 2000 · Unsolved Case
The Vaslui Hitchhiker Murders
Between 2000 and 2004, four women who had accepted lifts while hitchhiking in Romania's Vaslui County were found dead in wooded areas. The first three victims got into a vehicle near the ball-bearing factory in Bârlad in 2000, and the fourth was hitchhiking at the exit of Vaslui in 2004. The victims were aged 29 to 46. The investigation was criticised because a vehicle described by witnesses was not properly traced and investigators disagreed about whether the cases were linked. Prosecutors later said the method matched murders committed abroad by a man convicted of similar crimes there, but no one has been charged in Romania and the cases officially remain unsolved.
