HACHIOJI — 1995 · Unsolved Case
The Hachioji Supermarket Murders
At around 9:15 p.m. on 30 July 1995, three part-time employees of the Nampei supermarket in Hachioji, Tokyo, were found shot dead in the second-floor office. One was a 47-year-old woman and the other two were high-school students. The office safe showed signs of an attempt to force it open, leading investigators to believe the crime was a failed robbery. Ballistic tests pointed to a Philippine-made pistol, and DNA was recovered from traces near the scene, but no match was found. Because Japan abolished the statute of limitations for murder in 2010, the investigation continues; police have received thousands of tips over the years and offer a reward.
