The Murder of Nusrat Jahan Rafi
Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a 19-year-old student at a madrasa in Sonagazi, Feni, filed a sexual harassment complaint against the school's principal in March 2019. After she refused to withdraw it, she was lured to the madrasa roof on 6 April 2019 and set on fire; she died on 10 April at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Her dying statement sparked nationwide protests. On 24 October 2019 a Feni court sentenced all 16 defendants to death. In August 2026 the High Court upheld two death sentences, commuted four to life imprisonment and acquitted ten.
