OFFENBACH AM MAIN — 2014 · Murder
Death of Tuğçe Albayrak
Tuğçe Albayrak, a trainee teacher of Turkish descent, intervened on the night of 15 November 2014 to help two teenage girls being harassed at a fast-food restaurant in Offenbach. Shortly afterwards, in the car park, she was struck, fell and suffered severe brain injuries, slipping into a coma. Doctors declared her brain dead on 26 November; her family decided to end life support on 28 November, her 23rd birthday. Her death resonated widely in Germany and Turkey, prompting a debate on civil courage and petitions for a state honour. The 18-year-old attacker was sentenced in June 2015 to three years' youth detention for bodily harm resulting in death; the verdict became final in January 2016 and he was later deported.
