The Murder of Giulia Cecchettin
Giulia Cecchettin, 22, days away from graduating in biomedical engineering, disappeared near Padua on 11 November 2023 after meeting her former boyfriend. After a week-long search her body was found near Lake Barcis on 18 November; the ex-boyfriend was arrested in Germany the following day and extradited to Italy. The court accepted that he had planned the killing after refusing to accept the end of the relationship. On 3 December 2024 the Venice assize court sentenced him to life imprisonment. The case sparked nationwide protests against violence against women and femicide in Italy, and her family set up the Giulia Cecchettin Foundation.
