GARLASCO — 2007 · Murder
The Garlasco Murder
On 13 August 2007, 26-year-old Chiara Poggi was found murdered in her home in Garlasco, in the province of Pavia. Her boyfriend was acquitted twice before the Court of Cassation ordered a retrial, and on 12 December 2015 his 16-year prison sentence became final. Because of its disputed evidence, the case divided Italian public opinion for years. In March 2025 Pavia prosecutors reopened the investigation after previously untested DNA traces were analysed, and began investigating another person from the family's circle, who denies the allegations. Whether the final verdict will be reviewed through a retrial is under debate.
