Background
Abdullah Uslu died of a gunshot wound at his home in Marmaris, in Muğla province, on 28 March 2023. His wife and neighbours were reported to have been in the house at the time. Uslu, who worked in transport, was initially treated as having died in an accident, based on witness accounts.
Witnesses said he was intoxicated and that the gun went off while he was tucking it into his waistband.
The first investigation
The file was handled as causing death by negligence and was closed with a decision not to prosecute. However, a forensic report dated 18 April 2023 stated that the gun could not have fired on its own from being dropped or struck. That finding sat uneasily with the initial assessment.
Uslu's daughter objected to the decision. The Muğla 1st Criminal Judgeship of Peace accepted the objection, opening the way to a renewed investigation.
Reinvestigation and legal process
The file was re-examined by the Marmaris Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, coordinated with the Department for Investigating Unsolved Crimes, which was set up in April 2026. The statements of those in the house were found to contradict one another and the expert reports. Swab tests detected gunshot residue on several people.
In May 2026, Uslu's wife and a neighbour were remanded in custody, and the file has four suspects. A remand is not a conviction; proceedings are ongoing and there is no final verdict.
Where it stands today
The case shows how a file closed as an accident can be reopened years later. The family's objection and a fresh look at the forensic reports started the process. As the case proceeds, its legal character will become clearer.
