Background
Ummuhan Korkut was a young woman living in the Köyceğiz district of Muğla; some reports spell her name 'Ummahan'. She was beaten by her husband on 22 January 2025, suffered a brain haemorrhage and died on 28 January 2025. Because sources disagree on her age, none is given here.
After being detained, her husband said he hit her because she had not cooked.
What happened
According to the court's reasoned decision, her death resulted from intracranial bleeding caused by blunt head trauma and its complications. The ruling says the defendant punched her and that the blow made her head hit a wall. The investigation was initially conducted on a charge of attempted intentional killing of a spouse; the case moved forward after her death.
Her family and their lawyers argued the event should be treated as intentional killing.
The reasoned decision describes the cause of death in neutral forensic terms and ties the event to a single blow. The family maintains the act was done with intent to kill. The difference between the two views is the core legal question that determines the length of the sentence.
Investigation and legal process
At the hearing on 30 April 2026, the Muğla 1st High Criminal Court sentenced the defendant to 14 years for intentional injury of a spouse resulting in death, without a discretionary reduction. In its reasoned decision the court said the failure to cook and jealousy claims could not count as unjust provocation. It concluded that intent to kill was not proven, citing three points: no lethal weapon was used, no serious premeditated hostility was found, and the defendant tried to get her to hospital.
The family's lawyer appealed, seeking aggravated life imprisonment and arguing that a 14-year sentence amounts in practice to a reward. The Denizli Regional Court's 1st Criminal Chamber found the ruling lawful and rejected the appeal, after which the family went to the Court of Cassation. The process continues and the verdict is not final.
As the case continues, how the Court of Cassation handles the file is also being watched for how the line between intentional killing and injury resulting in death is drawn in similar cases.
Where it stands today
The case revived debate in Turkey over the distinction between intentional killing and intentional injury resulting in death in cases of domestic violence. The distinction directly affects both the length of sentences and the sense of justice. Dark Location presents this page in memory of Ummuhan Korkut and to draw attention to the legal debates in similar cases.
