Murder of Nayera Ashraf
Nayera Ashraf, a 21-year-old student at Mansoura University, was killed in broad daylight outside the campus on 20 June 2022 by a fellow student whose marriage proposal she had rejected. Footage filmed by students and security cameras spread on social media, provoking widespread outrage in Egypt and pushing violence against women to the top of the national agenda. The defendant admitted at trial that he had planned the killing. Mansoura Criminal Court sentenced him to death in July 2022, only weeks after the crime; the Court of Cassation upheld the ruling on 9 February 2023 and the sentence was carried out on 14 June 2023.
