Aqaba Port Chlorine Gas Disaster

ClosedSources: ALast updated: 14 October 2026

On the afternoon of 27 June 2022, at Jordan's Port of Aqaba, a pressurised tank holding about 25 tonnes of chlorine being loaded for shipment to Djibouti fell onto a ship's deck and ruptured when a crane sling snapped. A yellow toxic cloud spread across the port. Thirteen people died and more than 260 were treated for poisoning. The official inquiry found the sling was rated far below the load it carried and uncovered serious safety failings in handling hazardous materials. Senior port and maritime officials were dismissed and the case was referred to the prosecutor.
