MERON — 2021 · Major Tragedy
Mount Meron Crowd Crush
On the night of 29-30 April 2021, tens of thousands of people attended the annual Lag BaOmer religious celebrations at Mount Meron in northern Israel. As the crowd tried to leave through a narrow metal walkway with a slippery floor, people fell on top of one another. Forty-five people died and more than 150 were injured, one of the deadliest civilian disasters in Israel's history. In its final report in March 2024, the state commission of inquiry said the site had been known to be dangerous for years, that a 'culture of negligence' prevented action, and held numerous officials personally responsible, including the then prime minister and police commanders.
