On 16 July 2020, 27-year-old university student Pınar Gültekin went missing in the Akyaka area of Muğla; her body was found a short time later. The incident drew strong nationwide reaction against violence against women. The trial resulted in the first defendant being sentenced to 23 years in prison; on appeal this was increased to aggravated life imprisonment, while the second defendant received a prison sentence for tampering with evidence.
