GABORONE — 1996 · Murder
Murder of Ria Wolmarans (the Mariette Bosch Case)
Ria Wolmarans, a South African living in Botswana's capital Gaborone, was shot dead at her home in June 1996. Suspicion grew when, shortly afterwards, her husband began living with Mariette Bosch, a close family friend; the couple later married. After the murder weapon was linked to Bosch, she was tried and in December 1999 convicted of premeditated murder and sentenced to death. Her appeal was dismissed in January 2001, and she was executed on 31 March 2001 without her family being notified in advance. Dubbed 'Botswana's White Mischief' by the press, the case drew international attention in the death penalty debate.
