Murder of Carlos Cardoso
Carlos Cardoso, Mozambique's leading investigative journalist and editor of the newspaper Metical, was shot dead in his car by gunmen on his way home from work in Maputo on 22 November 2000. At the time he was investigating a fraud of around 14 million dollars at the Banco Comercial de Moçambique. In one of the country's most closely followed trials, six men were convicted in January 2003; the defendant identified as leader of the hit squad received 28.5 years. One convict escaped from prison in 2004 and was caught in Canada and extradited. Mozambique's Supreme Court upheld the convictions in February 2007. Questions over who ordered the killing continued to be debated publicly.
