Murder of Leigh Matthews
Leigh Matthews, a 21-year-old student, was abducted from the car park of Bond University's Sandton campus in July 2004. Her kidnapper demanded a ransom from her family; although her father paid R50,000, she was not released and was later found dead. In a case that shocked the country, the accused pleaded guilty in 2005 to murder, kidnapping and extortion, admitting the crimes were premeditated. He received life imprisonment for murder, 15 years for kidnapping and 10 years for extortion. He changed his account repeatedly in later years, and his bid for parole was again refused in 2025 after objections from the Matthews family.
