Murder of Senzo Meyiwa
Senzo Meyiwa, captain and goalkeeper of South Africa's national team Bafana Bafana, was shot dead on 26 October 2014 by armed intruders while visiting his girlfriend's family home in Vosloorus. Because several other people were in the house at the time, there has been long-running debate over whether it was a genuine robbery or a planned killing. The investigation stalled for years; the trial of five accused opened at the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria in 2022. It has been repeatedly delayed amid changes of counsel and witnesses, and as of 2026 it is still under way, dividing even the Meyiwa family.
