JOHANNESBURG — 2005 · Murder
Murder of Brett Kebble
Mining magnate Brett Kebble was shot dead in his car on a bridge over the M1 motorway in Melrose, northern Johannesburg, on the night of 27 September 2005. The investigation became one of South Africa's most talked-about organised crime and corruption sagas and fed into a separate corruption case against the then national police commissioner. The gunmen received indemnity from prosecution after testifying for the state in 2010, claiming the heavily indebted Kebble had arranged his own death as an "assisted suicide". The man tried for ordering the killing was acquitted for lack of evidence in November 2010.
