RATCHABURI — 2023 · Serial Murder
The Thai Cyanide Murders
In April 2023 the sudden death of a woman attending a Buddhist ritual on the banks of the Mae Klong river in Ratchaburi, and the discovery of cyanide in her body, triggered one of Thailand's largest poisoning investigations. Police linked a total of 15 poisonings in several provinces between 2015 and 2023, one of them non-fatal, to a woman accused of borrowing money from victims and taking their belongings; prosecutors said gambling debts lay behind the crimes. The defendant was arrested in late April 2023. In November 2024 the Bangkok Criminal Court sentenced her to death over the Ratchaburi death; separate trials over the other cases and appeals are ongoing.
